Guided Tour of Malagueira
Abstract
As part of the MALAGUEIRA.PT project and integrated into the programme of the CA²RE Conference Évora, we invite you to join a guided tour of the Malagueira neighbourhood, led by Pedro Guilherme and Sofia Salema.
Designed by Álvaro Siza from the mid-1970s onwards, Malagueira is a landmark of contemporary Portuguese architecture, where rural memory, the experience of modernity, and the construction of new forms of dwelling converge. Over nearly five decades, this territory has transformed not only into a built environment but also into a place of narratives, social practices, and collective processes that continue to redefine its meaning.
The tour will be framed within the theme of Mapping, which underpins this edition of CA²RE. The neighbourhood will be read as a living cartography: a fabric of infrastructures, streets, and courtyards, but also of memories, uses, and imaginaries. Along this route, Malagueira emerges as a privileged laboratory for reflecting on research methodologies in architecture, combining recording, interpretation, and representation.
Thus, the encounter with Malagueira goes beyond the observation of its architectural ensemble, unfolding as a broader exercise in critical mapping — a process of reading and reinscribing the territory that links past and present, project and lived experience, research and practice.
