THROUGH MAPPING
Territory Mapping The New Tectonics of Climate Action
Category: Visual essay
Abstract
Current modes of design and construction are deeply destructive, unsustainable and out-dated. (Derk Loorbach et al., 2024 and Forrest, Vobis and Schneider, 2024) The status quo needs challenging; how and what must change to achieve a radical transformation supporting new outcomes? This essay considers a bioregional approach to design and building. Through careful consideration of materials, those new and existing from the bioregion, the culture of design and building can be redefined. The tectonics of architecture are considered, beyond Kenneth Frampton’s framing and usage, to begin to describe a new imperative and community of design working through hyper-localised resource models. (Frampton,1995)
Mixed methodologies, potentially formed through a ‘diagonal axis’ will need to be employed in mapping and harnessing a bioregion, comprehending the tangible and the intangible assets of a region. (Coles and Defert, 1998) This process, both loose enough and well-structured to be rigorous and repeatable. Outcomes seek to be deeply embedded in their place, overtly legible through their materials and authenticity.
