Abstract

Weirs are one of the most significant vernacular hydraulic infrastructures in Portugal. The result of centuries of adaptation to hydrographic and topographic conditions, they were designed and maintained by local communities in response to essential needs for regulating the flow of streams and rivers, collecting, storing, and transporting water for agricultural and industrial activities. Their presence, far from being reduced to a technical dimension, expresses a profound articulation between biophysical, social, cultural, and economic factors in direct connection with communities.

At present, these systems face a fragile scenario: rural abandonment, climate change, and the erosion of collective memory compromise not only the physical structures but also the social and ecological systems that gave them meaning.

This work proposes an expanded reading of the weir system, integrating different dimensions of analysis — from technical — popular glossaries to critical cartographies, including visual representation. More than just cataloging traces or words, the aim is to build an atlas that shows and interprets the weirs as living heritage, capable of inspiring contemporary practices of cultural, ecological, and territorial regeneration.
