Duarte Belo

Duarte Belo (Lisbon, 1968). Studied architecture (1991). Since 1986, he has been working on a systematic photographic survey of the landscape, settlement patterns and architecture in Portugal. This work on the territory has resulted in a photographical archive of over 2,190,000 photographs. He has published several books on the weather and the morphology of Portugal, including: Portugal — O Sabor da Terra (Portugal — The Taste of the Earth) (1997-1998); Portugal Património (Portugal Heritage) (2007-2008) and the trilogy 15-5-20, which includes the books Caminhar Oblíquo (Walking Obliquely); Depois da Estrada and Viagem Maior (2020). Other projects that have been published as books, some co-authored, include Fogo Frio (2008); Portugal Luz e Sombra (2012); A Linha do Tua (2013); Paisagem Portuguesa, Portugal Possível and Das Pedras, Pão (2022); Tamanha Vastidão (2025). He has worked on important figures in Portuguese culture, such as Mário de Cesariny, Ruy Belo, Maria Gabriela Llansol, Alberto Carneiro, Miguel Torga and Sophia de Mello Breyner. He has been exhibiting since 1987. He has taught subjects related to photography and architecture. He has curated several exhibitions. He regularly attends conferences on landscape, architecture, working methods and photographing the land. He is also the editor of the blog «Cidade Infinita» (infinite city).
